The “Find Yourself” Series is a narrative about a skeleton who has lost its identity, or who thinks it has but is always accompanied by its true self (the butterfly with the skull markings) as well as its spirit guide (the lady bug). The series begins with the skeleton gazing into the water but not able to make out its reflection. The caterpillar enters the scene as the skeleton is losing its identity. On its journey, it gets closer and closer to finding itself with the help of its ladybug guide. The series ends with the butterfly on the skeletons face showing the transformation and thus eluding to “Finding oneself”.
The focus of life, death and transformation have been my concept used in several other works as well as series. After the death of my father, I lost a large piece of myself for quite some time. Years later I began exploring ways to cope and heal by transforming my pain into art which has helped me find my spiritual awakening.
I chose my subjects carefully and wanted to blend realism with surrealism for each piece. Besides the fact that I am obsessed with skeletons, I chose it to allow my viewers (any gender and any race) to connect with the subject on an emotional level.
“Underneath it all we are all the same!”
The butterfly represents transformation, life, endurance, change and hope. The lady bug spirit guide was added to bring another element to the trio. This softened the scene bringing a whimsical, playful sense to each piece. I have always associated lady bugs with luck but after further research I discovered that lady bugs also symbolize protection, love, self-reliance as well as looked to as spirit animals.
My hope is this series will serve as a reminder to myself and everyone that sometimes we do get lost in life but that if we keep going, keep looking we discover that we were never truly lost at all!
